Sunday was my birthday...33. Yikes.
To celebrate my mom and I continued our travel tradition and went on a long weekend trip. Over the years we've hit New York a couple of times, Vegas (for the big 3 - 0), New Orleans, and Santa Fe to name a few. This year we opted for Boston. I had never been to Boston and she had only been for a quick overnight trip. Our only criteria this year was that it be something different and that it be cold....so Boston it was.
We stayed at a fabulous boutique hotel right across from Boston Common called Nine Zero. It was perfect. Great location, great service, nice beds and pillows, spacious bathrooms. All the good stuff. Only thing missing was a good lobby bar, but they made up for it in other ways.
We spent Thursday and Friday "punching the sidewalk" (my version of "pounding the pavement") and dining on the local fare. We dined on chowdah, took a trolley tour of the city, hit a museum, popped in a few antique stores, and more.

If you know anything about me, you know that I'm a foodie....so great food was a theme of the trip After much research and recommendations here are the restaurants we settled on.
Sel De Le Terre - a great little country French style bistro where we had lunch one day
Locke-Ober - traditional, old-school Boston. Over the top dinner and drinks where you're bound to run into a Senator at any moment. We ate our "fancy" dinner there on Thursday night...our first night in Boston. Fabulous Lobster Bisque and delicious steaks. We even threw in a Creme Brulee (my fave) for good measure.
Bricco - Italian in the North End. Italian restaurants seemed to be the hardest thing for friends and reviewers to agree on. Bricco was recommended by my hotel and it was a hit! Probably my favorite meal of the trip. Great food, great drinks (even Mama Suze has a martini - - well I helped), great atmosphere, and great service.
Aquitaine - great spot in Chestnut Hill in the South End for brunch. we had a great brunch and loved the darling area and shops surrounding.
On Saturday we rented a car and headed south to Newport, Rhode Island where we spent the day. We dined on a giant lobstah for lunch overlooking the ocean at The Barking Crab. We shopped the downtown area, drove Ocean Drive along the coast, and toured The Breakers Historic Mansion...which was incredible.
