Labor Day

Monday is Labor Day and it got me thinking about what the heck Labor Day really is. Here's what I know....
(1) I get the day off
(2) it the end of summer (well not in Texas)
(3) you aren't supposed to wear white after it passes, and
(4) it clearly must have something to do with the American work force.
But the truth is I really don't know the nuts and bolts of this national holiday...so I sicked my research department on it and here's what we came up with...

Labor Day is basically is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. But how did it come about? Why do we celebrate it? Who started it? Etc, etc, etc?

The US has celebrated Labor Day as a national holiday since 1894....but did you know that Canada (a) also celebrates Labor Day and (b) has been doing so for as long as the US

So, who started it? Well, you gotta assume it had something to do with labor unions, but most historians credit one Peter McGuire (no, not the one who graduated from HP in the early 90s), but the Peter McGuire who was the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (try and fit that on a business card...whew). McGuire was also a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor.

Labor Day actually first started with a parade in 1882 in honor of the working class. The parade, held in New York City, was held on the first Monday in September and the Knights of Labor (the parade throwers) passed a resolution to hold all future parades on that same day....designating them as Labor Day.

Parades are still held in cities throughout Canada and the US in celebration of Labor Day, but we've also become accustomed to other traditional Labor Day activities like the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon.

Let's talk about the white after Labor Day thing too. Here's what Wikipedia says about it..
"Popular fashion etiquette dictates that white should not be worn after Labor Day. Originally it was white shoes that were taboo— white or "winter white" clothing was acceptable. The custom is fading: "Fashion magazines are jumping on this growing trend, calling people who 'dare' to wear white after Labor Day innovative, creative, and bold. Slowly but surely, white is beginning to break free from its box, and is becoming acceptable to wear whenever one pleases. In the world of western attire, it is similarly tradition to wear a straw cowboy hat until Labor Day. After Labor Day, the felt hat is worn until Memorial Day."

Ok, so clearly no one from Texas wrote this or came up with this rule. (1) I say you can wear white year round. I mean, I'd be naked more often than not if I couldn't wear a white shirt. I get the shoe thing, but I don't think youhave to ditch those until it gets much cooler - - - but I don't think we should worry to much with this...I mean are there really that many cute white shoes anyway?!?!? White jeans/pants is a new one though and I say wear em. Again, especially here in Texas. I think you can wear those puppies on into early October. I don't even know where to start on the comment about the straw cowboy hat. Seriously, your head would sweat to death if you started wearing felt next Tuesday. Yikes. As I learned back in my country radio working days at Young Country (that's a whole other blog), the rule in Texas is that your felt hat is your "dress" hat and can really be worn year round at night, but a straw hat is typically a day hat. Of course, you can don a straw hat here in Texas as long as its not winter and since winter doesn't start until, oh let's say November, we've got a few months to go.

This Labor Day also happens to mark the opening day of Dove season. So I'm sure many of you are dusting off the shotguns and ready to go blast some birds. Happy hunting!

So that's Labor Day in a nutshell. Bottom line is...I get the day off and that's all that matters to me....and after all...isn't it always about me!

Time Flies

Well the Edgar family has had several milestones in the past few week. Last Saturday my darling niece Perry turned one year old. I cannot believe. It seems like just yesterday we were all huddled in our camp at Presbyterian Hospital waiting for the word on her impending arrival. Little Perry Leigh Edgar arrived that afternoon and our lives were forever changed. She is such a doll....always seems to be in a good mood...and good lord that girl knows when she's the center of attention...can we say ham?!?!? I say...like aunt, like niece. :) She's a mini Leigh in the making.

The fam celebrated her bday last Saturday with a casual little get together. My dad surprised her with a darling red wagon that he's been wanting to give her since the day we found out she was coming. Aunt LG was so sad not to be there, but is heading to Dallas this weekend for more celebrating. I have a darling gift for her that will get there just in the nick of time (more on that at a later date). Here are a few pics from her bday celebration.

Today was also a big day....our little Miss Thing went off to "school" for the first time. Evidential Rusty and Carly dropped her off and she never looked back - - - "walking" into the joint like she owned the place and didn't miss a beat. I just talked to Big Fredgar who picked her up from school today. He informed me that her "report card" for the day gave her an A in nap time. Now, that's a mini Leigh if I've ever heard it.

"Ladies" Who Lake

This past weekend Ash and I headed up north toward Fort Worth for some fun in the sun with our Fort Worth gal pals. For years, Charlotte has hosted a girl's weekend at the lake which is always a blast and this year was no exception. The past two years I have not been able to come, so I very excited to see everyone and enjoy a little time at the lake.

The Friday night crew (Leigh, Ash, Char, MC, and "other" Leigh) arrived in time for dinner at Grump's. Keri decided to make a late night appearance after having to work late into the evening and we all spent the rest of the evening catching up over cocktails on the back porch.

Saturday morning we were greeted by two more arrivals....Erin and Mooring. We quickly took to the boat to cruise Lake Grandbury. Surprisingly, Keri even took a quick dip in the lake....very impressive! After cruising, we took the party back to the dock at the house for some dock drinks and more floating where Robyn and Jane soon arrived raring to go!

After freshinging ourselves up and a yummy dinner, we took to the back porch yet again for more catching up, singing, dancing, Facebook hazing, and tomfoolery. This night it was Sarah's turn to make a late appearance and she quickly chimed right in.

The weekend was a total blast. I had so much fun catching up with everyone and getting to know several girls much better (it's amazing how a weekend at the lake over a few cocktails can do that to you)....but I must tip my hat to the one that stole the show....and that would be the "other" Leigh....Leigh Jones...aka Leigh Baby. I'll just leave it at that...because after all what happens at the lake, stays at the lake. Oh...except for if it made the quote list....

If I weren’t married, I’d take my clothes off and lock myself in a closet with him. Leigh Jones
There isn’t enough chicken in the world. Ash
I don’t care about the finished product….i just like the pomp and circumstance. Leigh
It’s all about the tongue anyway. Char
You can fit both of them in there. MC
I’m glad I brought an extra pair of jeans. Leigh
Keep believing you’re awesome. Kelly (by phone)
His life is about to change. Leigh
I have a funny spot, it’s just not on my back. Leigh
How am I gonna remember some random Joe when I can’t remember you guys. Char
I don’t want you to put your thumb in my eyeballs. Char
The wetter the better. MC
I’ll revisit my attitude towards men when you revisit your attitude about yourself. Ash
We gotta drink up….I gotta make the list. Mooring
It’s not hard if you don’t suck. Leigh
We have another comer. Keri
I’m in the HOV lane to hell and I have a toll tag. Leigh
I love him so much I would share him. Ash
I think it’s hard to get into…and I’m easy to get into. Leigh
Shake, shake, shake….out plops a possum. Robyn
Here’s to “cat-erday!” Sarah
I feel confident about my cleanliness. Leigh
You just too my butt flower. Sarah
That just added a whole new level to my hangover. Leigh Jones

Font Fanatic

I admit it....I'm a font freak. Most of you know this about me, but it may come as a surprise to others. I'm obsessed...really. In fact, my pal Amidie emailed me just yesterday about the font Helvetica and how I totally started Helvetica. Ok, so I really didn't....but its and inside joke.

Evidently there's even a documentary called Helvetica....now tell me that doesn't have my name all over it. I'm sure some of you (ok probably all of you) would fine a documentary on fonts quite boring....but I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. Here's a clip for those you can handle the fun...

All that font talk got me all excited and this morning I was greeted to one of my monthly font e-newsletters in my inbox. Oh it's the little things that make me so very happy. Anyway, this particular font newsletter is a high point to my month. I can almost hear your chuckles and see your eyes rolling...really I love my font newsletter. Here's a screen shot of some of the fonts from today's email of fun. Click here for far more fun and to see the whole newsletter.

And it turns out, I am not alone. I loved this quote at the bottom of today's e-newsletter from Joe in Bordeaux, France.

Bumper Sticker Humor

Saw this bumper sticker on the way to work this morning and had a little chuckle over it. Interestingly enough....the guy driving was all over the road. Ha!

Music to my ears

I've seen an email go around a few times with a link to a site that tells you the number one song on the day your were born. So....since I'm completely unmotivated today I thought I'd give it a whirl and share it with you guys.

So....November 2, 1975. I don't know too much about that date...except I was born in Dallas, Texas while the Cowboys were losing to the Washington Redskins. Must be just the reason I've never been a Redskins fan...reigning on my parade and all.

And now I find that the number one song on that day was none other than "Island Girl" by Elton John. Ok, so I don't know the song - - - hey I was like one minute old, what can I say. But, I do think the title kind of fits. I've always been an island girl of sorts. And I do dream of one day cashing in my chips (ok, ok - I realize I don't actually have any chips) and moving to an island where I can wear my hair curly and work in a bar...mixing up mojitos. Yes, I admit....I have seen the movie Cocktail one too many times...but hey a girl can dream.

In my extensive research on the song (thank you google) I learned that the song was actually about a prostitute and a man who wants to take her back to Jamaica. So minus the whole prostitute thing....I'm definitely an Island Girl.

Click here to find out what the number one song was when you were born.....and let me know your tune!

You had to be there

As I wrapped up my review of Montana, you may notice that I left off a regular feature of my vacations...the quote list. Since the last entry was by no means a short one, I decided to make this a whole other entry...and yet another lengthy one. That's what you get on a 10 day trip. I'd also like to some disclaimers to today's entry for reasons that go without saying....except clearly not, because I'm obviously saying.

Disclaimer #1:
I'll start by recognizing the length of today's entry. Sorry, but that's what you get from a 10 day trip with these characters.

Disclaimer #2: I want to publicly recognize that this particular feature of Leigh Leigh Land is only fun, funny, and the like to those who were actually present during the said quotes, so I also enter them separately so that one could easily bypass this entry if they so choose.

Disclaimer #3: I'd also like to apologize for an innuendo, euphemism, and/or profanity that might offend any of you. Read at your own risk.

This trip we added some new features to the quote list.....the glossary/overly used terms....and the nickname list. So without further adue, I now present to you the Quote/Glossary/Nick Name List.....

Montana....the second half of the trip

Well folks, I'm back in Austin.....and boy am I bitter about it. I know, I know, I get no sympathy from any of you who have been melting back here in Texas in the hundred plus degree heat, but I'm still bitter. I miss it so much already and cannot wait to get back up there...whenever that may be. Pardon the length of this entry, but I was quite the slacker on the trip and now must post the longest blog in history.

Last I left you all it was Wednesday and the Wordens and the Frenches had extended their stay a few days, but sadly Brett and Sara had departed. Wednesday Ash, Alicia, and I headed to West Glacier for a fabulous helicopter tour of Glacier National Park . Captain Kruger was our guide and he did not disappoint.

While we helicoptered over Glacier, the Wordens and the Frenches toured Glacier by car and by foot...driving the Going-To-The-Sun-Road up to Logan Pass and the Continental Divide, and by hiking through the park.

That night we stayed in again for dinner and enjoyed some yummy pasta and that ever important bread (had to be there). The evening wound down once again with drinks and tunes on the porch.

Thursday morning Ash, Alicia, Wally and I fished the Swan River. The Swan is my favorite. As Alicia says...."it's so intimate." It's beautiful and remote. I love it. As I mentioned before my regular guide couldn't join us on the first day of fishing, so Alicia and I were ecstatic to finally get to see Rod and more importantly fish with him. At lunch, we presented Rod with our "special gift." Alicia and I had made him a photo book in celebration of our five years of fishing together. He was touched....really. The fishing disappointed that day, but the fun did not. Alicia was in rare form and kept us laughing the whole day.

After a great day on the water we headed to the "Wan Bar" (aka the Swan Bar) for burgers and beer. There we met up with Keri, Char, and Kirk who had tubed the Swan River down by the house and had many of their own tales of the day.

Friday morning Keri, Wally, Kirk, and Char sadly did in fact leave. That day Ash, Alicia, and I headed over to West Glacier to meet up with Banning for a half day fish of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. We finally had a great day of actually catching fish, even though my casting left something to be desired. Banning used to guide up in West Glacier during the summer, so he was full of tidbits along the trip and introduced us to all the locals.

After the trip, we met up with some of the other guides and old pals of Banning's for the third annual "Shoot Shit" skeet shoot competition. We had tons of fun, even though we stuck out like a sore thumb amongst this motley crew. After the Shoot Shit we joined the participants for a drink at the local bar before parting ways with Banning, Danger, Spanky, Bartles & Jaymes and the rest of the locals and we headed back to Bigfork.

On our last full day in Montana, we spent the day lounging around the house....reading, watching the Olympics, and just "generally kickin' it." We even canceled our dinner reservations and opted to stay in with pizza that night. We were really milking the down time.

But, as all good things do, this too ended on Sunday. We are all devastated to be back home in the brutal heat and back in the daily grind. In fact, I suggest you all check in on me regularly just to be safe. It was a wonderful trip and I can't wait until next year!

Trout Slayers Take on Bigfork, Montana

It's been a few days since my last post, but it's hard work being an expert vacationer and a blogger. Anyway, wanted to update you all on all the shenanigans and tomfoolery that has been taking place up here in the Flathead Valley of Montana.

Where were we.....oh yeah....

Friday we multiplied. Keri and Wally and Charlotte and Kirk arrived mid day and were greeted to an amazing al fresco lunch courtesy of chef Amini. Our friends immediately took to the scene and were soon getting cocktailed on the porch and enjoying the view. Wally was quick to hit the river for a little fishing as well.

Dinner Friday night was at Many Springs....great view, not so great food....but we didn't let a little thing like that spoil our evening. At dinner we did get the bad news that Brett and Sara missed their flight due to delays and wouldn't be in until the next morning. Being the soldiers that we are, we dried our tears and pulled ourselves together and headed to the Roadhouse for some drinks and dancing with the locals.

Saturday morning Brett and Sara arrived from Fort Worth and Banning left to meet up with his friends in West Glacier. We hit our fave lunch spot...Echo Lake Cafe for some yummy grub, then it was back to the porch for the afternoon. Saturday night we were once again treated to Ash's culinary brilliance with a delicious dinner....beef tenderloin in a peppercorn port sauce with green chili cheese grits and green beans. It was delicsh!

Sunday we were off to fish the day away. We met up with our guides and proceeded to slay some trout. We are quite a sight....so let me set the scene for you....

Alicia and I have fished with the same guide, Rod, for the past four years and this year we were devastated to find that he would not be able to join us on this trip. But we pulled up our boot straps and managed to get our excitement up for a day of fishing. Typically a boat is two people and a guide and typically you'd only float one boat down the river....but we had 9 people, so we were quite a scene with four boats. Alicia and I were"given" Andy as our guide in replace of Rod (for the day). We were tentative at first, but knew very quickly that Andy has the makings of a great back-up guide for us. The day was amazing....complete with lots of fish, cold beer, and beautiful weather. Alicia and I had our first hooking accident though this year....where she (accidentally) hooked my right arm with her fly. Took about 10 minutes to get that sucker out with the hemostats and I was quite the trooper. (although am not sure how current my tetanus shot is). After the long, fun day of fishing we all gather up at Woody's, our favorite gas station bar (you hear me right) to tell tales from the day. From Woody's is back to the house for some of Ashley's yummy (yet secret receipe) chili. What a great day!

After a long day of fishing we needed a day to regroup, so we spent most of Monday around the house...fishing, lounging, and the like. Monday was the last full day for the Fort Worth group so we ended the day with a sunset booze cruise on Flathead Lake and a nice dinner at Invite (my favorite restaurant in Bigfork). That night, in what can only be considered a stroke of genius, the Wordens and the Frenches decided to extend their trip to Friday. Sadly, Brett and Sara had to depart as scheduled yesterday. Because there were no longer plane flights out on Tuesday morning, we decided to blow it out on Monday night and after the booze cruise and dinner headed to The Garden Bar for more cocktails.

Yesterday was another free day. After Brett and Sara departed the remaining gang had lunch once again at Echo Lake.....so yummy, then headed back to the house for some chilin' in the river, fishing around the house, and just some "general kickin' it" as Kirk likes to say. Dinner was home-cooked and delicious....grilled pork tenderloin, Keri's yummy sauteed cabbage, and Ash's twice baked potatoes. After several jam packed days and late nights, we called it an early night for some rest and recovery.

So here we are at Wednesday. I'm starting to get sad about this now being the last half of the trip. I know, cry me a river, right?!?! Well, off to have more fun in beautiful Montana.

Eat Your Heart Out

Well my friends....we have arrived. Arrived in Bigfork, Montana that is. We left at the crack of dawn yesterday morning in order to arrive in Bigfork by lunch time. Along for the ride (on her way to Bozeman to visit Brooke) was Ashley's mom, Jan....who enjoyed our ceremonial bloody mary's and bubbly...circa 8am mind you.

After arriving at the Kalispell airport (about 30 minutes away from the house in Bigfork) we were enveloped in the beautiful 70 degree, crisp, clean air. On our way into Bigfork we hit our favorite road side fruit and veggie stand The Apple Barrel for fresh huckleberries, cherries and other indigenous deliciousness.

Since the car was packed with our excessive luggage and assorted sundries we headed on to the house where we unloaded and unloaded and unloaded an obscene amount of bags. Then it was off to our favorite lunch spot...Echo Lake Cafe where we dined on our usuals. After being fueled by lunch we braved the grocery store with Ashley's spreadsheets and marching orders in hand. I'm pretty sure the people at the Super 1 Foods had never seen the likes of us....four carts overflowing with the essentials....Fresca, Coors Light, Wine....oh yeah and some food. Here's a picture of our cashier with our receipt....

After unloading all our groceries with immediately took to the porch for a relaxing happy hour cocktail or two. Ash cooked up some delicious chicken and pasta for dinner and then it was back to the porch. Things didn't change much over the next five or so hours as we continued the exhaustive task of porch side cocktail sipping and poker over the tunes.

So, now it's Friday....day 2. Our friends from Fort Worth arrive today. Let the trouble begin.
